I’ve experienced the infamous CES bug firsthand, and let me tell you, it clings on long after the event wraps up. But, determined as ever, I’m here to share the latest exciting updates from the XR world that I’m sure you’ll appreciate!
Top News of the Week
The XR landscape seems a bit like a quiet autumn right now. While we all believe that AR and VR will eventually become revolutionary technologies, they currently remain rather niche and it’s tough to maintain momentum. I’ve covered these challenges before and this week’s developments continue to echo those sentiments.
To highlight a few:
- The development team behind PowerWash Simulator VR announced they’re halting updates after just a year, due to the costs outweighing the benefits.
- Soul Assembly, known for games like Drop Dead: The Cabin and Just Dance VR, is letting go of 15% of its team.
- Omdia and Sensor Tower’s analysis showed downloads of the Meta Horizon app dipped by 27% on Christmas versus the prior year, impacting VR holiday sales. Many Quest 2 users, it seems, weren’t eager for newer models like the 3 or 3S. Black Friday sales on Amazon reflected similar trends.
- Counterpoint reported a 4% decline in the global VR market in Q3 of 2024 compared to 2023.
- Former Sony executive Shuhei Yoshida expressed regret over his predictions about PS VR2.
- After seven successful years, the F.Reality podcast has concluded.
Given these challenges, developer Blair Renaud candidly lamented on X about the uncertainties facing developers like him. His concerns are shared by many others in the field.
Yet, amidst these concerning updates, some rays of hope shone through:
- A Forbes article lauded the metaverse as a preferred social platform over traditional social media for younger generations.
- Counterpoint’s analysis noted Apple Vision Pro shipments exceeding initial estimates, especially internationally, showcasing strong sales figures matching Apple’s projections.
- Beat Saber is on the verge of hitting a whopping 10 million copies sold on the Quest alone.
Despite the hurdles, it’s crucial for us to be optimistic and patient as we traverse the next few challenging years. CES didn’t unveil anything game-changing for AR/VR, except possibly in the realm of smart glasses. However, we need the resilience to press on.

Microsoft Update and Its Impact
Microsoft is rolling out the new 24H2 update for Windows 11, which all Home version users must accept. Why does this matter to the XR community? This update ends Mixed Reality support on Windows 11, effectively rendering WMR headsets unusable. Though some Pro or enterprise users might evade it, those with the Home edition have fewer options. It’s a tough blow for dedicated WMR folks; consider this my virtual hug to you all.
ASUS’ Cool New Trailer
ASUS recently dropped an engaging trailer for their AirVision M1 smart glasses. While not a fresh release—having appeared at CES 2024—they’re certainly intriguing with their 3DOF design offering a virtual screen. The glasses boast impressive specs and are priced at a reasonable $700 when compared to competitors.
