Earlier this week, Steel Wool Studios unveiled the much-anticipated release date for Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic. Fans can look forward to its arrival on PS5 and PC on June 13th. However, an unexpected twist has caught everyone’s attention: the studio has discreetly eliminated all references to PSVR 2 compatibility, sparking speculation and curiosity among gamers.
This intriguing installment of the franchise was initially showcased at PAX West 2024, where a playable PSVR 2 demo suggested a blend of VR and traditional gameplay dreamed up by the team’s creative XR minds. Steel Wool Studios, since its inception in 2012, has been making waves in the VR world, backed by a substantial $5 million investment from HTC in 2016. They’ve successfully delivered immersive experiences with titles like Hello Neighbor Search and Rescue (2023) and both the original and sequel of FNAF: Help Wanted (2019 and 2024, respectively).
But now, after revealing the release date for this new chapter of FNAF, the studio has conspicuously omitted any mention of PSVR 2 support from their promotional materials. Notably, even the PlayStation Store page for Secret of the Mimic, which previously hinted at optional VR support, has been altered. The only recent PSVR 2 reference was in a PlayStation announcement on February 12th, which has since been unceremoniously removed.
Currently, Steel Wool Studios remains silent on whether PSVR 2 support will appear and whether the PC versions—available soon on the Epic Games Store and Steam—will offer VR options. We’ve reached out for clarification and will update the community as soon as we hear back. It’s unclear if this is a temporary delay for the VR feature or part of a broader release plan.
For now, FNAF: Secret of the Mimic invites players into the mysterious and deserted halls of Murray’s Costume Manor. Here, you will delve into the secrets left by the enigmatic inventor, Edwin Murray. According to the game’s enticing description, the Mimic is a prototype endoskeleton with a chilling ability to assume any costume, transforming into any character, including your deepest fears.
In this adventure, you’re left to rely on your smarts, a handful of gadgets, and a sparsely detailed corporate dossier. Your mission? To recover Fazbear’s coveted prototype technology while you decode cryptic messages and evade a menacing shadow determined to eliminate all intruders.
