Xbox is bidding farewell to its Avatar Editor app, marking the end of an era for these enhanced digital characters that debuted back in 2018. Both Xbox consoles and PCs will see the removal of this app in early 2025.
This decision quietly surfaced on Xbox’s support site over the weekend, detailing that as of January 9, 2025, the app will no longer be available. This means users won’t be able to access Xbox Avatars or use any purchased avatar items anymore. To soften the blow, Xbox has announced they will offer refunds for any Avatar purchases made from November 1, 2023, up until the app’s removal date in early 2025.
The Avatars affected by this are the ones introduced with the 2018 update, celebrated for being more detailed, expressive, and creative compared to the original Xbox 360 versions. However, the original Xbox Avatars aren’t going anywhere. They will still function in supported Xbox 360 games and remain accessible via the Xbox Original Avatars app.
Avatars seem to have lost their charm in recent years. According to an FAQ, Xbox sees the decline in use and the decision to discontinue support stems from “low engagement” and a strategic “shift in focus toward delivering other player experiences.” Players can still inject their personal flair into their profiles through dynamic backgrounds, custom profile colors, and other options.
Looking ahead, Xbox is far from idle. They’re working on new projects, including a stand-alone handheld device and have already begun developing the next generation of their console lineup.
